Skill India Mission
‘Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.’ Having a similar intentions in mind, the government of India had launched the Skill India mission in 2015, with the aim of skilling 400 million people by the year 2022.
A majority of the Indian population is between the ages of 18 and 60. And a very minute portion of these are skilled and/or employed. The rest are unemployable because of a variety of reasons; such as no access to formal or vocational training, most have not completed their education, and a lot have no guidance.
To cover this gap, the Indian government will work along with National Skill Development Corporation to train individuals from all strata’s in all manners of courses ranging from Industrial to Vocational to Entrepreneurial, thus helping them become employable and add value wherever they are.
There are certain reservations in regard to this mission as previous programs with similar intentions have not been able to give results because of the sheer number they had targeted. Even this program has had a slow beginning but the government has brought in a lot of changes and parallel programs to elucidate that they are serious about the success of this mission.
Three years have already passed since the inauguration, with very little to show for but let us keep our fingers crossed. They may still have a few cards up their sleeves.
